Powhatan Native American- Powhatan, Virginia



The Powhatan (Paqwachowng) Nations were Virginia Algonguians speaking people. There were between 14,000-21,000 Powhatan people in eastern Tidewater Virginia when the English colonized Jamestown in 1607.  Under the leadership of Chief Wahunsunacawh Powhatan he created the Powhatan Confederation with 30 additional Native American Nations in eastern Virginia. Each of the tribes within this organization had its own weroance (leader, commander etc..) which all paid tribute to the Powhatan Chief.
